How to Move Like a Boss!

25 Times! I have moved twenty-five times in my life. That comes out to a move of some kind every 26 or 27 months. Six of these were before I turned eighteen. Many of these have been international moves that included storage during long periods of absence. My top ten suggestions are:

  1. Own Less! Whenever I move, I find things I still haven’t used since I moved last time. Sell it, give it away, or recycle it.
  2. Start Early. Plan out weeks in advance what you are going to do. Make lists of things to 1) sell, 2) give away, and 3) Recycle. Set aside days for sorting, packing, storing oversized items, etc.
  3. Buy Boxes. Purchase some small, medium, and large-sized boxes for packing. It is essential for packing, storing, and shipping that there be uniformity in box sizes. Going to the grocery store and getting a bunch of random-sized boxes is a nightmare.
  4. Use Heavy- Duty Tape, Liberally. When purchasing tape, spend the extra to get quality heavy-duty tape. You will need a few rolls for sure. Get a tape gun for dispensing packing tape.
  5. Bubble Wrap and Paper. Bubble wrap highly fragile items. Other breakables, like plates and glasses, can be wrapped in moving paper or newspaper. Beware, it will take bubble wrap and paper than you think.
  6. Completely Fill Boxes. When you pack the boxes, fill them as much as possible so that there is stability across the box and keep the items in place. You can use paper or other types of fill to accomplish this.
  7. Rent the Vehicle and Equipment You Need. It is far simpler to rent the vehicle (truck, van, etc.) and equipment (two-wheeled dolly, appliance dolly) than strain your back trying to move that awkward stuff yourself.
  8. Wrap Furniture with Paper and Stretch Wrap. You can purchase paper on a roll and stretch wrap. Covering the furniture will help keep the dust off of the furniture if in storage. Wrapping and stretch wrapping will also keep it from damage as it is being moved in and out of your place of residence.
  9. Make a List. Every box gets a number and room written to keep the dishes from ending up in the bedroom. Also, keep a list of what is in each box to find what you are looking for more easily.
  10. Own Less. To own less is the most important one. We are just obsessed with junk in our culture! Buy fewer items but higher quality items. Owning less makes packing and moving easier.
